EFFECTIVENESS OF RICE STRAW MULCH ON THE PRODUCTIVITY OF BISI-2 HYBRID MAIZE IN THE DRYLAND AREAS OF GUNUNGKIDUL

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different rice straw mulch thicknesses on the growth and productivity of Bisi-2 hybrid maize cultivated on dry land in Gunungkidul Regency. The experiment was conducted in Besari Hamlet, Siraman Village, Wonosari District, from February to June 2026 using a Randomized Block Design with four treatments: no mulch (M0), 3 cm straw mulch (M1), 5 cm straw mulch (M2), and 7 cm straw mulch (M3), each replicated four times, resulting in 16 experimental units. Data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, analysis of variance, and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that straw mulch thickness significantly affected plant height, leaf number, and stem diameter, but had no significant effect on ear length, fresh kernel weight, and dry kernel weight. The 5 cm mulch treatment produced the highest plant height (265.38 cm) and the greatest number of leaves (16.31 leaves), indicating that it is the optimum mulch thickness for supporting the growth of Bisi-2 hybrid maize on the drylands of Gunungkidul.
